Woolwarehouse Color Sorting (and yarn ordering in general)

If you are living in the United States, you have probably been using worsted weight yarn for many of your projects. Many people use Red Heart Super Saver, which I have always disliked because it was so scratchy, stiff, and thick to work with. I always like the shininess and softness of Caron Simply Soft, but not the splitting. I love, love, love the colors of Lion Brand’s Landscapes and Red Heart Unforgettable, but they are roving yarns – which means they can be slightly different thicknesses throughout – and fuzzy and a real nightmare to rip out (ribbit – “frog”) if you make a mistake.

After joining several crochet groups on Facebook, I kept hearing people from across the pond talk about Stylecraft Special DK yarn. Many of the crochet designers seem to use this brand, or Scheepjes Colour Crafter, and offer packs for their projects. The yarn is a level 3 weight, which is maybe slightly heavier than sport, but less than worsted. Some might say light worsted. At first I was skeptical that I would like a lighter weight yarn, and, still, for some projects, a heavier weight yarn might be more suitable. But when I was trying to fit 365 rows into one blanket, I needed a lighter weight yarn! It is very soft and lovely! I have almost every color now of the SSDK, and probably half of the Scheepjes Colour Crafter.

The only issue with ordering from these two sites is that it has to ship across the pond, and might take a little longer than a local company. If you are ordering a small amount (or even larger) and you need it quick. You might also try Texas Yarn Farm.  I have ordered from them many times. There are also some other US retailers, but I tend to order from either Woolwarehouse or Texas Yarn Farm. Deramores has always taken longer to receive their shipments – although I think they have recently moved to try to change that.

Anyway….on to the original purpose of my post. I don’t know how long this has been a thing on the Woolwarehouse site, or if I just didn’t notice it, but did you know that you can sort by color? This is extremely helpful if you are trying to put together temperature project or projects using similar colors or gradients.
